Fire Safety

The Facts:

fire_safety.jpgAt least one child dies from a home fire every day. In one hour, about 16 children will sustain injuries from fires or burns. Of all fire-related deaths, 88% are due to home fires which spread rapidly through the home, leaving families little time to escape.

Safe Kids Tips:

  • For the best protection, install smoke alarms in every level and every sleeping area in your home. Test each smoke alarm at least once a month and be sure to replace smoke alarms every ten years.
  • Create a home fire escape plan with two escape routes in case of a fire. Teach children to get low and out when they hear the alarm sound. Practice the escape plan with a stopwatch to time how fast your family can exit the house.
  • Be sure to childproof your electrical outlets and appliances by covering electrical outlets so they are inaccessible to children.
  • When you are done using an appliance, unplug it and keep the appliance cords out of children’s reach.
  • Kids love to reach! While cooking, keep hot foods away from the edges of your counters. Always cook on the back burner and turn pot handles away from the edge to prevent hot spills
  • Teach older children who cook for themselves to never leave a stove or oven that is in-use unattended. Teach proper use of oven mitts and potholders while removing items from the stove or microwave.
  • Remember to keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything the can burn and be sure to turn them off every time you leave the room.
  • When using candles, remember to blow them out before leaving the house or going to sleep. Keep these, along with matches and lighters out of reach of children.
